  • RISING FIFTH GRADERS

    • This summer, the students will read Restart by Gordon Korman.
    • Students will need to read the book, but also understand that their first graded assignment in the fall will be to complete a ‘Book Talk’. We will be discussing the book and the ‘Book Talk’ expectations during our first week back to school.
    • For each of the chapters, there are four questions provided. You must choose at least 2 questions per chapter to respond to in written form. Additionally, there are 5 questions at the end of this document that I would like you to think about. We will be discussing these questions in depth once you return to school.

    • This summer, the students will read Lily’s Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff.

    • Students will need to read the book, but also understand that their first graded assignment in the fall will be to complete a ‘Book Talk’. We will be discussing the book and the ‘Book Talk’ expectations during the first week back to school.
    • Finally, the last page of this document provides some background information about World War II. Please review this information prior to reading your book in order to better understand the historical context.
    • For each of the chapters, there are four questions provided. You must choose at least 2 questions per chunk of chapters to respond to in written form. Additionally, there are 5 Questions to Think About at the end of this document that I would like you to consider. We will be discussing these questions in depth once you return to school.     • Students will not just need to read the book, but also understand that their first graded assignment in the fall will be to complete a ‘Book Talk’. We will be discussing the book and the ‘Book Talk’ expectations during the first week back to school.
    • For each of the chapters, there are four questions provided. You must choose at least 2 questions per chapter to respond to in written form.     • This summer, students will read The Wave by Todd Strasser.

    • Students will need to read the book, but also understand that their first assignment in the fall will be to complete a ‘Book Talk’. We will be discussing the ‘Book Talk’ expectations during the first week back to school. Those who have already presented ‘Book Talks’ could begin preparations as they read, but they will receive a refresher that first week.

    • Be prepared to answer the following questions in a Socratic seminar during the first few weeks of school. You need to only write responses to FIVE of the ten questions. You may choose which questions you formulate written responses to. More Details »
